Fireblocker Needle Felts for Safe Seating Comfort
Fire protection for aircraft, trains, and more

To meet special requirements for fire protection in trains, trams, ships and aircraft, renowned seat manufacturers use special technical needle felts as fire barrier between the outer fabric and the upholstery material. The most important properties that a fireblocker must have are flame retardancy, low toxicity, and minimal smoke development in the event of a fire. Our special fireblocker needle felts offer effective fire protection for seating systems in rail vehicles and aircraft.
As a fire-retardant intermediate layer between the upholstery and the cover fabric, the needle felts made of special fibers used here meet the highest safety standards and ensure durable, comfortable seating solutions.

Train seats: Fire protection with high-performance needle felts

The European standard EN 45545-2 specifies requirements for the fire behaviour of materials and components in rail vehicles to ensure the safety of passengers and staff in the event of a fire. Flame-retardant needle felts, in particular our BWF FireGuard®, BWF Fireblocker ARA and BWF Fireblocker SFO qualities, meet the required fire protection standards for railway seats, such as the current European standard EN 45545-2, and impress with

  • flame retardancy and low toxicity
  • self-extinguishing properties
  • non-melting and non-dripping characteristics
  • high LOI value

Renowned seat manufacturers equip seats with our fireblocker needle felts as a fire protection barrier and supply them to renowned rail vehicle manufacturers such as

  • Siemens
  • Alstom
  • Bombardier
  • Stadler
  • Skoda
  • China Train Group

Aircraft seats: Take off safely with fireblocker needle felts

The requirements for the materials used in the aircraft sector, including fireblocker needle felts as fire protection barriers in seats, are even stricter than for rail vehicles. In addition to factors such as low flammability, low smoke emission, minimal toxicity and high temperature resistance, weight also plays a decisive role here. The lower the total weight, the lower the kerosene consumption. Here too, we offer appropriate fire protection solutions for seat manufacturers with BWF FireGuard® and BWF FlexGuard® needle felts made from high-performance fibres. Our nonwovens are used in seats from renowned manufacturers and fly in aircraft from

  • Airbus
  • Boeing
  • Embraer
  • Comac
  • Bombardier

The high-tech nonwovens used comply with the standard FAR 25.853(a).

Questions and answers about fireblocker needle felts

A fire blocker or fire barrier made of synthetic needle felt or nonwoven is a fire protection barrier that is used between the upholstery and cover fabric of aircraft and train seats to prevent the spread of fire or to delay it for as long as possible. In trains, for example, they help to ensure that passengers can be evacuated in good time and personal injury prevented as far as possible. These needle felts are made from flame-retardant or non-combustible special fibres and special fibre blends to meet the required standards, such as EN 45545-2.

For railway applications, the European standard EN 45545-2 regulates fire protection for rail vehicles. It specifies the fire behaviour and hazard levels that individual components, including fire blocker felts, must meet. Technical needle felts from BWF Protec, which are used as fire barriers in railway seats, are made from special synthetic fibres and are tested and certified in accordance with this standard. They therefore meet the requirements for fire protection in rail vehicles.
In Europe, EN 45545-2 is a mandatory standard for all newly approved rail vehicles and replaces national standards. In addition, this fire protection standard is also accepted worldwide and is often used as a basis.

Particularly strict fire protection regulations apply to aircraft interiors. Materials used as fire protection barriers in aircraft seats are tested in accordance with FAR 25.853(a). Here too, BWF Protec offers a range of fireblocker needle felts under the brand names BWF FireGuard® and BWF FlexGuard® that have passed the relevant tests. A particular challenge in the aircraft sector is that all materials used must be as lightweight as possible while also being very durable.

Fire protection plays an important role not only in the air and on the rails, but also in other modes of transport such as buses and ships, where flame-retardant needle felts have become indispensable. In the marine sector, for example, we offer nonwovens tested in accordance with IMO 2010 FTP Code Part 8.
Fire protection is also a crucial safety criterion in public buildings and event venues, i.e. anywhere where large numbers of people are present in enclosed spaces at the same time. Fireblocker needle felts are therefore also used in theatres, concert halls and cinemas, and not just in seats. Needle felts can also play an important role in ceiling and wall coverings. With the right needle felts, fire protection and acoustic effects are combined in a practical way.
